Why I'm Starting a Website

Creating my own website always seemed like a big deal. It was as if once I created a website, I wouldn’t be able to go back, back to the days where I was writing just for me, back to simpler times. I felt like starting a website would be a way for the world to track my failures and laugh in my face.

My fears are still there but I don’t want to give them any more control over me. If my dream in life is to be an author, I need to write and write religiously. I need to learn how to take criticism and move forward, how to defend my writing choices but also accept help. It’s going to be a process but one that I am excited for, albeit a little nervous.

So why now? What changed?

I graduated from college in December and started a big-girl job. My life is starting to really take shape and I don’t want to leave my writing behind. As I was looking for jobs and looking at different fields, I kept looking for ones that would allow me to write on the side and continue to try to publish my works. My desire to write, and write more than ever before is there.

My skillset has also changed. For the last year and a half, I have been an intern for the College of Arts and Sciences and got exposed to website design. I built and updated webpages for my college website, giving me exposure to what works and what doesn’t. I have mentors who have their own websites and businesses that they run on the side. I feel like there are so many people in my corner, cheering me on and pushing me to do more.

So, here I am. I still don’t know all the particulars of what I want this website and my brand to look like. I have no doubt that this website will change and adapt as I learn what works and what doesn’t work for me but my foundation is firm. I know that I want to carve out a space for myself, where I can write what I want on my own terms. I want to share what I have already learned in my twenty-one years of life and also have a place where I can admit where I’ve fallen short. I have plans to write blogs over a range of topics from college life, Endometriosis, writing, faith, and travel.

Above all else, I want to inspire others to follow their own dreams, no matter what they are. It might be scary but it’s time to take the plunge and give myself over to writing. Here goes.

Write on,
MRC
